The Week Ahead: Read Across America, Borough Meetings and State Basketball Tournament

Plus, a play performed by students at Salt Brook Elementary School, the library's Thursday night reading group and tickets for the upcoming high school play, Bye Bye Birdie.

Monday

  • Read Across America Week kicks off today. Several guest readers, including local police officers, members of the teaching staff, administrators and parents, will visit with students at the Allen W. Roberts Elementary School and Salt Brook Elementary School throughout the week.
  • The borough council will meet at 6 p.m. to discuss the Municipal Budget and at 7 p.m. for a council meeting. Both will take place in the Municipal Center.
  • The Board of Education is meeting in the high school/middle school media center at 8 p.m.
  • Tickets for Bye Bye Birdie, which will be performed by students from the New Providence High School on March 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. and March 13 at 3 p.m., go on sale today. Tickets are $12 for reserved seating, $10 for general admission and $8 for seniors and students. Tickets may be purchased from a student, at the high school main office or by email at NPHSmusical@yahoo.com. Group discounts are also available.
  • The New Providence United Methodist Church is hosting its weekly Re-Employment Seminar at 7:30 p.m. The topic is "Death by Document - The Marketing Resume," where instructor Lloyd L. Feinstein will examine myths surrounding the resume. Any individuals attending are encouraged to bring a copy of their current resume, a pencil and a pad.

Tuesday

  • Today is Author Day at Salt Brook Elementary School. Children's author Linda Oatman High will be presenting grade-level workshops to the students and then eating lunch with class representatives.
  • The Summit Old Guard will meet at 9:30 a.m. in the Municipal Center. Barbara Brummer, Ph.D. will present "What Does Sustainability Mean?"
  • Everett Price, Madison Ricks and Caitlin Toner from the varsity winter track team will compete in the Eastern State Championships in New York City at 4:30 p.m.
  • The state basketball tournament begins today. The girls' varsity basketball team will play host to Newark Arts High School at 6 p.m. and the boys' varsity basketball team will host Weequahic High School at 8 p.m.
  • The Community Activities Advisory Board is meeting at 7:30 p.m. in the third floor council conference room of the Municipal Center.
  • The Planning Board is meeting at 8 p.m. in the Municipal Center.
  • The New Providence Memorial Library will screen The Social Network at 2 p.m. in the Conti Family Meeting Room.
  • The New Providence Memorial Library is hosting a "Job Search Skills for the Age 40+ worker" program at 7 p.m. and will focus on what has changed in the job search process.

Wednesday

  • The New Providence Senior Citizens Center Club will meet at 11 a.m. to celebrate March birthdays and learn about organ donation services at The Sharing Network.
  • Artwork by the Adult Drawing and Painting Class, taught by Marjan Nirou from the Recreation Department, is on display daily at the New Providence Memorial Library. Today, the artwork can be viewed from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Our Lady of Peace Church is hosting a "Life is a Highway" Tricky Tray Dinner on March 25. Tickets are now on sale for $48 per person. Contact Jan Manger at 908-665-2696 for more information.

Thursday

  • Artwork by the Adult Drawing and Painting Class, taught by Marjan Nirou from the Recreation Department, is on display daily at the New Providence Memorial Library. Today, the artwork can be viewed from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • The New Providence Memorial Library's Thursday Evening Reading Group is meeting at 7:30 p.m. to discuss The Good Thief by Hannah Tinti. All are welcome.
  • The Food Pantry at Our Lady of Peace Church is low in mayonnaise and ketchup. Any donations would be much appreciated.

Friday

  • Students at the Salt Brook Elementary School will perform The Secrets of Salt Brook Manor. Dr. and Mrs. Barletta, residents of New Providence, have written and directed each Salt Brook play for more than 10 years.
  • Students in Grades 5 and 6 at the Allen W. Roberts Elementary Schools will perform in a Talent Show at 7 p.m.
  • Both elementary schools will also have a school-wide D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read) time this afternoon, where students and staff members sit in the hallways and read.
  • Members of the varsity wrestling team will compete in the state tournament in Atlantic City at 8 p.m.

Saturday

  • Members of the varsity wrestling team will compete in the state tournament in Atlantic City at 12 p.m.
  • Home for Good Dog Rescue, based out of Summit, is hosting their Second Annual "Taste of Italy" Fundraiser at the Long Hill Community Center in Stirling, which will include a 50/50 raffle and tricky-tray along with a spaghetti dinner. The event donation of $35 ($12 for children 12 and under) is tax deductible and all proceeds will go toward the rescue's adoptive efforts. For more information, visit homeforgooddogs.org.

Sunday

  • Members of the varsity wrestling team will compete in the state tournament in Atlantic City at 10 a.m.
  • Check out live Traditional Irish Music and talk at New Providence Memorial Library at 2 p.m., presented by Lesl Harker on the Irish flute, Veronica McNamara on the Irish fiddle and Eileen McIntyre on the Irish harp. The presentation is funded by a Union County HEART Grant and is free for all.
