Favorite Places: Princeton

Our staff and readers weigh in on the best places to eat, shop and hang out in Princeton.

As anyone who has ever lived in or visited Princeton knows, it has a lot to offer. I’ve been a Princeton regular since I took my first bus trip into town back in high school in the mid-‘70s. Back then, I’d grab a slice at Victor’s Pizza before seeing a movie at the Playhouse.

In more recent times, I could be found in the stacks of Micawber Books or grabbing breakfast at the old Carousel Luncheonette.

I think all of us have our favorite places in town, whether they be small restaurants or places to shop for trinkets or books—and Patch wants our readers to share.

I am going to kick off the series today with a trio of my favorite Princeton places. Add yours to the comments or send them to us and we’ll post them. If we can encourage more people to visit, then we can ensure that some of our favorite places will remain successful for a long, long time.

, Witherspoon Street: Plainly put, I am a coffee snob. I like strong java fresh brewed and roasted and, if at all possible, I'd like it to get it from someone I can trust. That's Small World to me—and it's why I make sure to swing by the shop on Witherspoon Street whenever I'm in town, to get a cup and a scone and to grab a pound of beans to go.

, Tulane Street: I stopped by the shop earlier this month with a crate of old LPs that I knew had little value, but might fetch me some credit—and I left with three compact discs (including two by the Velvet Underground that I had on vinyl and cassette but had never seen on disc) and could have left with dozens more. Do I need to say more?

, Witherspoon Street: Princeton is not always mentioned in conversations about the best pizza in New Jersey, but there are a couple of great places to grab a pie and hang. The best of these, of course, is this long-time community staple, home to one of the best thin-crust pies going (get it with onion and red peppers) and the most unpretentious atmosphere around.
