PRINCETON, NJ – Enthusiasm for a new and improved Community Park South seems to catching on in Princeton.

Plans are underway in the Municipality to renovate the 26-acre expanse. A concept plan was presented to the Council during last week’s meeting.

Two members of the Princeton Girl Scouts Troop 71829 spoke to Council members during last week's meeting, seeking permission to create murals at Community Park South, when the project is approved and complete. The troop includes fifth-grade girls from five different schools in the Municipality.

The Troop wishes to create multiple sidewalk murals with paintings that will have positive affirmations to encourage runners and walkers using the path.

“We hope to make the park a happy place to promote fitness and a sense of belonging,” a Girl Scout said.

The girls proposed a mural consisting of four panels - two on each side of the walking path. The murals will be painted with environmentally safe paint, the Girl Scouts said.

Council members applauded the students for taking the initiative and coming up with a proposal.

Councilwoman Michelle Pirone Lambros said the Girl Scouts touched upon two issues that were close to her heart – upgrading and developing Community Park South and public art.

“I love the idea, we all do. I really appreciate it and you are in the right company tonight,” Pirone Lambros said.

The Councilwoman said she would be in touch and discuss the idea further with the Girl Scouts.

The concept plan for the park includes new tennis courts, pickleball courts, two restrooms, new playing fields, softball and baseball fields oriented to the angle of the sun to accommodate right and left-handed batters.

The plan also includes a “family zone” that will include a picnic area, a new playground, bocce courts, and a place to play volleyball or cornhole.
