Princeton Officially Kicks Off Vision Zero Campaign With New Website, Resident Pledge

PRINCETON, NJ - Princeton has officially launched its Vision Zero Initiative, a comprehensive safety program aimed at eliminating all traffic deaths and serious injuries on the municipality's roads.

The data-driven initiative focuses on improving street design, public education, enforcement, and emergency response while prioritizing pedestrian and cyclist safety over vehicle throughput. The program operates under the principle that "even one death or serious injury is too many."

"By establishing the Vision Zero Princeton initiative, the Municipality reaffirms its commitment to the safety of our roadway and transportation infrastructure by proactively prioritizing people over cars in the design process," Councilman David Cohen said. He noted that while Princeton experiences relatively few serious traffic incidents, the Vision Zero framework helps identify problem areas and allocate resources effectively using a comprehensive safety approach.

Princeton formally joined the global Vision Zero movement through a municipal resolution in 2022. Since then, the framework has guided major planning decisions, including the Mobility Element of the Master Plan, which establishes a street design hierarchy favoring walking, biking, and public transit over single-occupancy vehicles.

The municipality has already implemented several Vision Zero-inspired infrastructure improvements on streets like Witherspoon Street and Terhune Road. These projects include reduced speed limits, raised crosswalks, curb extensions, narrower travel lanes, and enhanced tree coverage.

The launch includes a new municipal website, where residents can watch the official launch video, review local crash data, and report dangerous road conditions through the See-Click-Fix system.

The site also features a Vision Zero Motorist Pledge, where residents can commit to safe driving practices and receive a free vehicle magnet promoting the initiative.

The initiative was developed with input from a dedicated Vision Zero Task Force that included community members, municipal staff, and local officials.
