UPDATE: Canopy At Former Dinky Station Collapses, No Injuries Reported

The canopy of the former Dinky train station on University Place collapsed late Thursday afternoon and toppled onto the bed of the train tracks, but no one was hurt, Princeton University spokesman Martin Mbugua said.

The incident happened around 4:25 p.m. in what is now a construction zone on University property. The station was relocated several hundred feet down the line in August as part of the University's $300 million Arts & Transit project.
The 200-foot-long canopy section covered the platform area of the old station, which has been fenced off due to construction.

A Patch reader at the scene reported that rescue workers were using thermal and sound probes to search the area for more than two hours after the collapse.

The Princeton Fire Department, Princeton Police Department, the University's Department of Public Safety, and Princeton First Aid & Rescue Squad were responded to the scene, along with the Mercer County task force that investigates structural collapses.

Police closed University place between College Road and Alexander Street. University officials asked drivers and pedestrians to avoid Alexander and University Place for several hours and find alternate routes.

Trains continued to run without interruption.
