WEATHER ALERT: 'Long Duration' Snow, Ice, Rain Storm To Hit New Jersey

A "long duration winter event," is predicted to hammer New Jersey with ice, snow, and freezing rain through early Tuesday.

This storm won’t shock people...but it should last a while.

The National Weather Service has issued a ”Hazardous Weather outlook,” predicting a significant winter storm that will span several days, with snow falling Saturday through Monday night, and into Tuesday, in New Jersey.

Northeast New Jersey and northern Pennsylvania will bear the brunt of the “long duration winter weather event,” according to the NWS. The weekend storm could continue to soak New Jersey through Tuesday, dumping 3 to 5 inches of snow in the northern parts of the state, The Weather Channel reports.

In Essex County, snow will start to fall after 12 noon Saturday, with a chance of snow and freezing rain after 9 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Snow, sleet, and freezing rain will continue to fall in the region through Monday night, with sheets of ice and snow accumulating Sunday, according to The Weather Channel.

Central New Jersey will get a wintry mix while South Jersey and the Jersey Shore should get rain,

A potent disturbance will start to dive south of the Canadian border and into the Great Lakes on Saturday. This system will then sweep into the Northeast Sunday, lingering through Monday and Tuesday, particularly if low pressure develops off the East Coast, according to The Weather Channel.

The offshore track sweep towards the Northeast could produce prolonged accumulation, with snow falling through early Tuesday.

A storm with such a long life could create hazards for New Jersey residents. Piled-high snowdrifts from last week’s snowfall have yet to melt, as heavy snowpacks prevent temperatures from dropping.

While it is too early to determine precise snowfall totals, “a swath of significant snow” could cover the northern Great Lakes into the Northeast, The Weather Channel says.

Snowfall and wet weather will create hazardous conditions on roads and sidewalks, causing travel delays, as the snowstorm gains momentum Sunday into Monday, Accuweather.com reports.
