The average New Jersey property tax bill topped the $10,000 mark for the first time ever in 2024. See numbers for Mercer County:

MERCER COUNTY, NJ — Property taxes are always a hot-button issue in the county. The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs recently released updated tax tables for each town.

Data shows that property tax bills from hit another all-time high for Garden State homeowners last year.

Property taxes in New Jersey are made up of three parts: school, municipal, and county. In 2024, the average property owner in New Jersey paid 52.2 percent of their total for school taxes, 29.9 percent for municipal taxes, and 17.9 percent for county taxes.

For an average home valued at $287,874, Mercer County residents paid $9,714 in taxes.

Taxes and home values have gone up steadily throughout New Jersey over the past decade, regardless of what political party is in the governor's seat. Statewide, the average bill topped $10,000 for the first time in 2024, landing at a record-high $10,095 on a home valued at $382,988.

Some experts have pointed out that a high tax bill doesn't necessarily mean a homeowner is getting ripped off, however – it depends on what you get for the money.

  • Hamilton Township: $7,653
  • Hightstown Borough: $10,601
  • Hopewell Borough: $13,786
  • Hopewell Township: $14,954
  • Lawrence Township: $8,903
  • Pennington Borough: $15,623
  • Trenton City: $3,690
  • Robbinsville Township: $12.694
  • West Windsor Township: $16.076
  • Princeton: $22,718
