RED BANK, NJ — Employees with the Red Bank Department of Public Works were performing routine maintenance on a catch basin Tuesday when they found what appeared to be a hand grenade in the basin, the borough confirmed.

The DPW crew was doing the maintenance when they found the object in the basin at the corner of River Street and Tilton Avenue, said Police Chief and Interim Borough Administrator Darren McConnell.

The New Jersey State Police Bomb Unit responded and took possession of the item, he said.
