HEADS to Kickstart Art Ed with Red Bank Show

New Jersey Museum of Contemporary Art is presents a public art show featuring more than 50 large-scale paintings of heads in Red Bank this month.

Organizers of an upcoming public art display in Red Bank are hoping the show, called “HEADS,” will encourage art education and are using a fundraising campaign to help develop a curriculum based around the project.

New Jersey Museum of Contemporary Art is presenting the show, a series of more than 50 large-scale portraits created by Romanian artist Dumitru Gorzo, at a number of locations around the borough. The paintings, which focus on “expressive, allegorical, strange, satirical, and futuristic heads,” will each be 4 feet by 8 feet and will be hung outdoors on sites like the Anderson Building on Bride Avenue and the Count Basie Theatre on Monmouth Street, among others.

In an effort to reach grade school students and grammar schools throughout the state to travel to Red Bank to take in the show, NJMoCA has announced a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to fund a free and unique education program as well as an audio tour and temporary signage. The fundraising goal is $3,000 and expires Aug. 19, the day the show launches in Red Bank.

According to a release, Red Bank was chosen as the exhibition site because of its rich history, cultural organizations, easy train access and great architecture buildings, which will provide the perfect display background. This is the first time a museum-curated exhibition will take place outside museum walls in New Jersey, according to organizers.

The show was granted support by a borough council and excited Mayor Pat Menna who welcomed the outdoor-concept art show at a recent council meeting.

The Kickstarter campaign allows donors to donate as little as a dollar or as much as they can. Various donation levels yield a number of different rewards, including a HEADS t-shirt, postcard, and even a private tour of the HEADS gallery, among others.
