RED BANK, NJ — Bicycle safety is the goal of an upcoming bike light and helmet giveaway in Red Bank.

Borough Interim Business Administrator Chief Darren McConnell said the borough is accepting new helmets only as it does not want to risk getting any that may have been involved in a crash and could be compromised for safety.

Any helmets left over from the event will be made available at other times, he added.

Donations of helmets can be dropped off at the department, 90 Monmouth St.

Dean Ross, a Farmingdale resident and Red Bank business owner, has been spearheading this safety initiative by Monmouth Reform Temple for the past eight years.

Ross said in October that the event is a social action project of the temple that, to date, has given away 500 lights.
