RBR Cyber Tech Students' Global Win

Red Bank Regional (RBR) High School's Academy of Technology (AOIT) students earned a global recognition attaining fifth place in the international 2013 Cyberlympics Challenge.

The RBR team — of juniors Tyler Birn, Red Bank, Zachary Carrano, Little Silver, Louis DiOrio, Union Beach, Mark Eulner, Shrewsbury, Josh Even, Shrewsbury and  Cris Sochacki, Union Beach — won the top fifth spot out of 72 high school teams worldwide, an RBR release said.

The students readied for the competition, by meeting in their technology classroom over the summer and working together through three levels of competition within three days' time spanning 20 hours, according to the release.  

The competition started with a digital forensics challenge for which the students were given a flash drive and asked to extract evidence. The challenges got progressively more difficult and culminated in a final challenge of  having to secure eight computers while being attacked in a live environment, the release added.

“While team members had experience in digital forensics, what was even more impressive, all of them were competing for the first time at the cybersecurity level," RBR Cyber Teams Coach Mandy Galante said, adding that this group of students, which was first assembled for the summer competition, will be part of the new dream team for this competition year. "With new recruits like these, the RBR CyberTech teams can expect to bring home more trophies in the upcoming year, perhaps one with a Universe title!”

Global CyberLympics, sponsored by EC-Council, is an international online cyber security competition with a myriad mission to discovering new talent in the vital information security field and raising global awareness of information security.
