RED BANK, NJ — An event to mark the first anniversary of the Dobbs decision, in which the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade abortion protections, will take place at noon Saturday, June 24, at Riverside Gardens Park, here.

The event is hosted by New Jersey Legislative District 11 Democratic candidates Sen. Vin Gopal, and Assembly running mates Dr. Margie Donlon and Luanne Peterpaul.

They expect to be joined by other local, state, and federal elected officials from across the region, according to Katey Sabo, head of communications for the Democratic campaign. Attendees should arrive by 11:30 a.m.

Sabo said Jackie Cornell, a representative from Planned Parenthood, is a special guest at the event and will be speaking. Red Bank Councilmember Kate Triggiano will also be speaking, Sabo said.

The event "marks an unfortunate date," Sabo said, but it also a chance to "re-engage" on the issue.

According to a Planned Parenthood Q&A site, on Friday, June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court issued its ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, overturning Roe v. Wade, and ending the constitutionally protected right to abortion.

Roe v. Wade is the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in all 50 states. Prior to the Roe decision, the legality of abortion was up to individual states, and most states outlawed it, resulting in a patchwork of abortion access nationally.

In November, the District 11 Democratic candidates will face Republican candidates Steve Dinistrian for Senate and incumbent Assemblywomen Marilyn Piperno and Kim Eulner.
