SHREWSBURY, NJ — Shrewsbury Borough is now served by the Monmouth County 911 Communications Center for police, fire and EMS calls, the county sheriff's office announced.

This means all dispatch for the borough is now run through Monmouth County.

The Monmouth County Communications Center answers calls for 48 municipalities, provides dispatch services for 28 police departments, 85 fire companies and 42 first aid squads, the Sheriff's Office says.

“The Monmouth County 911 Communications Center is the largest shared service in Monmouth County, and this move is a great example of enhancing public safety at a cost savings,” said County Sheriff Shaun Golden.

He said the change will mean a high level of service with a trained team of public safety telecommunicators.

The Monmouth County 911 Communications Center has been answering emergency calls for Shrewsbury Borough for more than 20 years.

Prior to the recent takeover, when an emergency call came in from the borough, police, fire and EMS departments would have to be contacted by Monmouth County’s Public Safety Telecommunicators.

Now, when residents dial 911, an alert is sent out directly to police officers, firefighters and EMS squads, streamlining services.

“Having all of Shrewsbury Borough’s dispatch services run through the Monmouth County Communications Division is a tremendous benefit," said Shrewsbury Borough Mayor Erik Anderson, who is also a Republican candidate for the Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners.

"This shared service and consolidation is the most efficient and effective solution for borough residents in the event of an emergency," he said.

The Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office Communications Division operates two 911 centers with the primary center located in Freehold Township and a backup/disaster recovery center in Neptune, according to the Sheriff's Office website. The center employs over 110 full-time staff members.
