UPDATE: Motorcyclist Leads Police on High Speed Chase, Crashes

A Bergenfield man led police on a chase from New Milford through several Bergen towns before crashing in Ridgewood, according to police.

A motorcyclist who led police on a high speed pursuit through several towns was rushed to the hospital Saturday night after wiping out in Ridgewood, according to police.

Kervin Paras, 19 of Bergenfield, was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center suffering from "non life-threatening injuries" after he lost control of the bike on Ackerman Avenue near Bellair Road,  Lt. Todd Harris said.

Police say Paras was traveling at a high rate of speed when he lost control, struck a curb and was tossed from the bike.

The pursuit began in New Milford. According to Frank Papapietro, Police Officer Brian Carlino observed Paras on River Road making an illegal turn against a red light onto New Bridge Road. Carlino attempted to make a motor vehicle stop, but Paras "accelerated and refused to stop."

"Paramus Police Department, monitoring the SPEN (State Police Emergency Network) broadcast from New Milford Police, observed the motorcycle a short time later and also attempted to initiate a stop," Papapietro said.

Paramus police are leading the investigation into the chase and investigators are still piecing together exactly what led to the pursuit, authorities said.

According to Paramus Police Capt. Brian Goggin, Paras made an improper turn at New Bridge Road and Main Street in New Milford before leading police onto Route 4 West through New Milford, River Edge and Paramus.

From Route 4 traveling westbound, Paras then entered Route 208 heading northbound and exited at Morlot Avenue in Fairlawn.

Paras then made a left onto Saddle River Road and continued to Ackerman Avenue in Ridgewood. When he attempted to make a turn onto Bellair Road in Ridgewood, he struck the curb, lost control of the motorcycle and crashed.

Goggin said Paras suffered several abrasions and lacerations as a result of the impact. Paras was released from Hackensack University Medical Center into police custody the same evening.

No one else was injured and no other vehicles were damaged as a result of the high speed chase.

Goggin said there was no indication Paras was intoxicated or under the influence of any illegal substance.  Paras was charged with eluding, reckless driving and several other motor vehicle violations, police said.

Paramus Judge Gallina set bail at $25,000 per criminal complaint with a 10 percent option. Judge Kelly from New Milford also set bail at $25,000 per criminal complaint with a 10 percent option.

Goggin said after a several hours in a holding cell at Paramus Police headquarters, Paras’s mother paid the bail and Paras was released.
