RHS Grad Organizes Softball Clinic, Will Walk 60 Miles to End Cancer

"I figured if they can win the battle against cancer, I can walk 60 miles...," Christine Reynolds says.

A grad is working to end the global struggle against breast cancer with an unorthodox idea – Christine Reynolds will be walking a grueling 60 miles and also organizing a softball clinic in her hometown this weekend.

A 2011 RHS grad and former softball player, the University of Delaware student will be participating in the three-day, 60-mile Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk on Oct. 5-7 in Philadelphia.

To help drum together funds, Reynolds put together a clinic featuring current and former RHS varsity players for the upcoming weekend at Veterans Field. For $15, students in grades 2-9 can learn and refine offensive and defensive skills. Prizes, music and a bake sale are among the other offerings, Reynolds said.

Reynolds has the ambitious goal to raise $2,000 before she walks in October. She's making good progress, netting $1,400 as of Tuesday. All of the proceeds go directly to the Susan G. Komen Foundation to fight breast cancer.

"I came upon this idea because almost everyone has been affected by cancer, whether someone has lost a loved one or has personally fought off cancer, it is unfortunately something that almost everyone has had to struggle with," Reynolds told Patch.

Reynolds herself has had multiple family members stricken by the disease and hopes awareness and funding can one day lead to a cure. Her upcoming struggle, she said, will be little comparison to those fighting for their lives.

"I figured if they can win the battle against cancer, I can walk 60 miles to try to make sure that [fewer] people will have to fight cancer in the future," she said.

The softball clinic schedule is as follows:

On Saturday, Aug. 18 and Sunday, Aug. 19, players in grades 2-5 take the field between 10 and 11 a.m.; those in grades 6-9 follow between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m.

Donations can be made at Reynolds' fundraising site or they can be brought to the clinic. Any further questions should be directed to Christine Reynolds by e-mail, at Christine5519@aol.com.
