Victims ID'd In 'Related' Garfield Homicide, Suicide: Prosecutor

The homicide victim, Manuel Buri, 25, died of blunt force trauma to his head, authorities said.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Authorities have released the identities of the men killed in a related homicide and suicide in Garfield Saturday.

The homicide victim, Manuel Buri, 25, died of multiple blunt force trauma to the head, said acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo.

A resident of the apartment building Buri lived in on MacArthur Avenue found his body in a basement apartment while authorities investigated the suicide of another man, Manuel Ortega-Pimentel, who lived in the apartment complex, Calo said. Ortega-Pimentel, 55, was struck and killed by a NJ Transit train at about 3:53 p.m. near Hobart Street in a suicide, Calo said. Ortega-Pimentel ran into the path of a train at a railroad crossing there, he said.

Buri's body was found in a pool of blood while authorities tried to locate Ortega-Pimentel's next of kin and checked his last known address, the MacArthur Avenue apartment building, Calo said. Police received a 911 call shortly before 10:30 p.m. regarding Buri's body.

The Bergen County Medical Examiner's Office ruled Buri's death a homicide and Ortega-Pimentel's death a suicide.

The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, the Garfield Police Department, the Bergen County Sheriff's Office, and the New Jersey Transit Police Department are continuing to investigate Buri's homicide.
