A man has been charged with assault after he broke into a woman's Bergen County home early Tuesday and she fled with 4 kids, police said.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Police say a Newark man is under arrest after he broke into a Paramus home, where his girlfriend was staying with four children, and began breaking things.

Jerry Green, 38, has been charged with assault, criminal mischief, and resisting arrest, said Paramus Police Chief Robert Guidetti.

Police say the woman and four children managed to flee their Paramus home around 1 a.m. Tuesday morning and called 911 after Green broke in, the chief said.

"The call involved her boyfriend, who had forcibly entered the home, where she and her four children were staying," said Guidetti in a release.

"The suspect, armed with a stick, began causing damage inside the residence, including ripping a cable box off the television," the release said. "Upon arrival, officers assessed the situation and treated it as a barricaded subject incident. The Paramus Emergency Services Unit (ESU) were immediately deployed to the scene."
