Elementary Level NJ ASK Scores Show More Advanced Proficient Students

The Department of Education released the results of the 2011 state-wide testing assessments

Across all grades levels in the three elementary schools in River Dell, anywhere from 50 percent to 75 percent of students were found to be advanced proficient in language arts and mathematics on the 2011 NJ ASK tests. Students from grade three through six took the annual assessments in May of 2011.

Third Grade

Across the entire state, in Language Arts Literacy, 55.8% of all students scored at the Proficient level and 7.2% scored at the Advanced Proficient level. In Mathematics, 40.5% of all students scored at the Proficient level and 38.4% scored at the Advanced Proficient level.

Students in River Edge were deemed to be 73.1% proficient and 7.7% advanced proficient in language arts with 36.3% proficient and 59.9% advanced proficient in mathematics. Over in Oradell, 75.8% were proficient and 15.9% advanced proficient in language arts with 26.5% proficient and 72% advanced proficient in mathematics.

As students progressed, their scores were again meeting or exceeding the state averages. In Language Arts Literacy, 55.5% of all students scored at the Proficient level - Oradell measured at 70.9% with River Edge at 70.6%. And 7.2% scored at the Advanced Proficient level - Oradell came in just under at 5.5% while River Edge excelled at 15.3%.

Statewide mathematics scores are below that of what local students are being measured at. In Mathematics, 47.2% of all students scored at the Proficient level and 32.1% scored at the Advanced Proficient level. Oradell had a 48.8% proficiency level and 40.3% advanced proficient. River Edge followed suit with 51.5% proficient an 45.6% advanced.

As the only grade level to be tested in science, Oradell broke even with 45% and 48.8% proficient and advanced proficient results. River Edge on the other hand had 35.7% proficient and a staggering 62% in the advanced category. Statewide, 42.3% of all students scored at the Proficient level and 47.7% scored at the Advanced Proficient level.

Grade Five and Six

At both the fifth and six grade levels, Oradell and River Edge students were deemed advanced proficient in mathematics by an overwhelming number compared to the state average.

In fifth grade 39.5% scored at the Advanced Proficient level across the state but Oradell saw 73.3% and River Edge had 65.8% come in higher. At the next grade level, students in Oradell (73.3%) and River Edge (48.4%) exceeded the state average (27.6%).
