Hawks Stay Undefeated on the Mat

A weekend recap of River Dell and Bergen Catholic sports

River Dell wrestlers (4-0) retained their undefeated record with a 48-27 victory over Indian Hills, a 42-24 win over Ramsey and a 57-17 decimation of Elmwood Park. The Braves took just five weight classes against the Golden Hawks - Tristan Gierek (120) defeated Danny Lynch, 7-3; Nick Polifrone (160) pinned Alex Kim in 3:20; Jack Conklin (170) pinned John Dickson in 4:34; Danny Della Iacono pinned John Butler (195) in 1:22 and Ken Healey (285) pinned Brian Coyman in 1:59. Two days later, arch rival Ramsey proved to be no match for the mighty Hawks in a 42-24 victory for River Dell. Winning their bouts were Dylan Mitchell (106), Lynch, John McLaughlin (126), Brendan Campbell (138), Tyler Kallensee (160),  Nick Baranello (182), and Lenny Smith (220).

Thursday night was huge for Kennedy head coach Jim Ring as his Knights rallied to defeat Bergen Catholic basketball (4-3) 69-52 in Paterson. The win was also Ring's 300 career win. While Bergen controlled the first half with Richie Deluca's team high 17 points (three from behind the arc) and PJ Reed's 12 points, the Crusaders were not able to keep the offensive power going as Kennedy dominated in the second. The Knights were led by senior guard Sammy Singletary who scored 10 of his game high 33 points in the fourth quarter. The Crusaders were not able to rebound on Sunday when they fell 98-62 to St. Benedict's down at Kean University. DeLuca led with 16 points and four treys.

All River Dell boys basketball needed was a little more time and one more shot to overcome Bergenfield on Friday night - and they got exactly that in a 39-36 overtime victory. Tim Barnes led all scorers from both side of the court with 20 points while Ryan Duran added a pair of three-pointers. Chris Fasano and Ben Orth also came in from behind the arc.
