Kiselick Upset in Region 2 Wrestling

A look back at the final week of River Dell and Bergen Catholic's regular season

In a surprising, Hunter Kiselick came into the tournament as the fourth seed and wound up with an early exit as Cresskill's Ray Kim came out with a 5-2 decision. Kim entered the tournament unseeded looking for a shot to advance. All remaining Golden Hawks and Crusaders will compete in Hackensack, tonight at 6pm in the quarterfinals.

The Lady Hawks finished the regular season in a three-way tie with rivals Pascack Valley and Bergenfield for the Big North Patri­ot Division title. The tacked on a 47-34 win over Fort Lee on the road Tuesday night with strong second and fourth periods while the Lady Bridgement fought with every chance they had. Fort Lee's Ally Long netted a game high 20 points. The Lady Hawks followed up their win over Fort Lee with a 45-41 victory over Pope John to end the season. Kate Brock had 19 points, Kayla McGovern finished with 10.

Despite strong efforts between the posts by David Gerity (4 saves) and Gennaro Anzevino (31), the Bergen Catholic Crusaders were blanketed by an overpowering Delbarton Green Wave on the ice during the Gordon Cup quarterfinal match-up. Bergen fell 6-0.

This weekend, eight River Dell indoor track stars are looking to pick up titles at the State Meet of Champions. Competing will be Matt Koh (shot put), Laura Oh (shot put), Bridget Brindley (pole vault), Calvin Hartman (pole vault) and the 4X400 relay team of Paige Fernandez, Melissa Gibbons, Jamie Woods and Noreen Byrne. Prior to that at the Bergen County Championship at the Armory Track Center: Matt Koh took second and Austin Berniger placed sixth in the shot put, Brandon Jurasin (high jump) finished fifth, Calvin Hartman (pole vault) came in third, the boys 4x400 came in fifth, and Christian DeSantis placed sixth in the pentathlon. For the girls were: Jamie Woods (55HH) in third, Paige Fernandez (1000m) was third, and Laura Oh (shot put) was second.

BC basketball rode to victory on the court against Paramus this week, 93-61 behind 10 treys from a combined six Crusaders. Richie Deluca led the way with four shots from behind the arc in his game high 20 points. BC took a staggering 50-30 point lead at the half and continued to fast pace charge till the end.

Sean Boland (20) and Tim Barnes (24) had the Golden Hawks overcome a feisty Fort Lee Bridgemen team, 67-57 to end the season on a high note. While the Bridgemen were strong at the foul line and posts, River Dell stayed out of foul trouble and focused on remaining tight inside.
