New Year Could Bring New Roof to DPW

Estimated repairs costs will be discussed at future month

The currently leaky roof at the building could be gone later this year as Peter Pulice of Pulice/William Architects suggested removing three dormers and creating a flat roof instead of the initially proposed $16,000 bid to replace the entire roof.

"When I examined the initial drawings that proposed installing a foam roof I felt that was not the best option," Pulice said. "Instead we could remove the three dormers and eliminate the water infiltration problems that are plaguing this building."

The slanted shed roof design had the dormers installed to allow for additional natural light into the DPW garage. But at the same time, because the dormer protrude outwards it allows for snow and ice to accumulate and ultimately leak into the building.

An additional issue that was discovered is a lack of proper water collection systems along the rear building to remove drainage. As water rolls off the rear building it ponds and creates an icing problem.

"I would suggest putting an industrial gutter along the back with a drainage pipe to pull the water away from the building," Pulice added. "There is a lot of activity back there with employees and vehicles and it would be safer to fix the drainage issue."

While Pulice did not have a cost estimate available he is currently working out a rough budget to present to the Mayor and Council by next month.
