Patriot Title Goes to Bergenfield in Tight Wrestling Match
The Golden Hawks and Crusaders weekly sports recap

Wrestling in honor of alumni Dan Glover, the Bergenfield Bears overcame the River Dell Golden Hawks 30-25 for the Patriot Division title. The Hawks took control early in the lower weights, but the middle and heavy categories belonged to the Bears. Following a moment of silence, Bergenfield won four bouts in a row (John Volmer at 145, Mike Valle 152, Johnathan Marrero 160 and Hons Seri 170). Winning for River Dell was Dylan Mitchell (106), DJ Tirelli (113), Danny lynch (120), John McLaughling (126), Cenzo Cariddi (138), Nick Baranello (182) and Lenny Smith (220).
Both the River Dell girls and Bergen Catholic bowling squads suffered early week losses on Monday. The Lady Hawks were downed 7-0 by Ramsey while BC suffered a close 4-3 upset by Westwood. Brian Hund had a high series of 644 (224, 211, 209) with Charles Long rolling a high game of 223. The Golden Hawks boys bowling knocked off the Rams 5-2 with high games from Max Barnett (231) and Scott Kim (204). Bergen rebounded on Tuesday with a 7-0 shutout of Paramus with Hund and Long rolling a 648 with Lezaja ending with a 609. The Hawks though could not bounce back as each squad fell 7-0 to Fort Lee on Wednesday.
Hawks swimming finished out the regular season against the Fair Lawn Cutters with the girls coming out on top (98-72) with the boys falling short (115-55). Taking first place finishes were: Liam Oberlander (100 fly), Peter Mari (100 breast stroke), Brian Seeber/Matt Starace/Albert Figueiredo/Oberlander (200 free relay), Hayley Degnan (200 freestyle, 500 free), Eilish Devine (50 Free), Emily REynolds (200 IM), Gabby Denicola (100 fly), Elizabeth Figueiredo/Maddy Toohey/Degnan/Devine (200 free relay) and Denicola/Reynolds/Degnan/Devine (400 free relay).

Tuesday night will not be remembered as a highlight in the Crusaders basketball season as Bergen was decimated on the court 72-31 by arch rival Don Bosco Prep. The Ironmen's faster and physical pace was to much for Bergen to handle. Senior guard Richie DeLuca, who averages 12.1 points per game, was held scoreless while his teammates could not reach double digits.
Ben Orth netted four treys to lead the Golden Hawks squad in a 52-39 victory over Cliffside Park. Tim Barnes chipped through the paint to lead with 26 points. The Lady Hawks also knocked off the Raiders on Tuesday night with a 46-28 win behind Kate Brock's 16 points and Jordan Bastable's 9.

Indoor track was back in Manhattan for the Metropolitan Invitational on Wednesday. River Dell's Matt Koh placed third in the shot put with Calvin Hartman also finishing in third for the pole vault. Laura Oh came in fifth in the shot put as well.
Bergen Catholic trailed in the race for a Big North United Division title, finishing behind champion Don Bosco. The Ironmen ended with 115 points, the Cursaders had 77. Dan Lynch came in second in the 55HH and high jump, Craig Scheuring and Matt Morano both came in third for their respective 600M and 1000M races. Morano came back for a second place finish in the 1600M with Mike Whalen picking up second in the 3200M. Jack Lippin (shot put), Jack Crosbie (long jump, triple jump), and the 4x400 relay each came in third. Ted D'Amico had the only first place finish for Bergen with the pole vault. The 4x800 relay came in second.
