Tractor-Trailer Crash on Turnpike at Ridgefield
State troopers rescued driver, conscious but injured from nearby creek.

A tractor-trailer crashed at 5:35am this morning on the Turnpike off Route 80. The cab of the truck fell into Overpeck Creek, taking driver Lawrence Scherf, 66, with it.
Scherf, of Vails Gate, NY, is in critical condition at St. Barnabas Hospital.
Three state troopers found Scherf in Overpeck Creek, still conscious after the. He was flown via medical helicopter to Hackensack University Medical Center before being transferred to St. Barnabas.

A second truck was reported to be involved, but those reports were not confirmed.
Traffic was delayed for hours along the Turnpike as the tractor trailer hung from an overpass near milepost 117. State police, the Ridgefield Park fire department, and Bergen County Hazmat were still on the scene as of 8:00am.
