Waterspirit To Monitor Highlands Beach For Microplastics
You can register for the Thursday, June 29, program to help identify possible microplastics at Snug Harbor Beach in Highlands.
RUMSON, NJ — Waterspirit, based in Rumson, is inviting the public to join Program Manager Anne Price as she monitors the beach at Snug Harbor in Highlands for microplastics.
The event is Thursday, June 29, at 10:30 a.m. at Snug Harbor Beach, Snug Harbor Avenue, in Highlands, 07732. You can register for the free event here.
Price is volunteering for the Plastic Wave Project, a grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the public about the harmful impacts plastic pollution has on oceans and communities.

The goal is to create healthy, plastic-free waterways, Price says.
Plastic pollution continues to enter coastal waters and the list of wild animals affected by plastic debris is growing to include not only sea turtles, whales and seabirds, but shellfish and planktonic fish, Waterspirit says.

Participants will join Price as she collects samples from the beach to be studied for microplastics.
Participants on Thursday will discuss what Waterspirit is looking for, why it is monitoring, and what is done with the data.
