How to Cool Off in Rumson and Fair Haven

A round-up of ways to stay cool in R-FH during the heat wave.

With the heat index expected to reach over 100 degrees in the coming days, the National Weather Service has issued a warning that conditions may become dangerous beginning Thursday and lasting until Saturday night.

According to a statement from the service's Mount Holly office, the excessive heat warning will go into effect for much of New Jersey, including Ocean and western Monmouth Counties, beginning Thursday at noon.

High temperatures coupled with rising humidity are expected to bring the heat index to about 105 degrees Thursday.

The service expects the index to increase to 110 degrees on Friday. It is then predicted to reach between 105 and 110 degrees on Saturday.

  • On the Navesink there are lots of things to do to stay cool. Try a wakeboarding lesson with Lines End Wakeboard School, go tubing off a friends boat, take the kayak out for a ride, or rent a crabbing boat from Oceanic Marina and bring home dinner on this hot summer day.
  • Another cool place is under water. Campers from the Horizons program at the Rumson Country Day School walk to neighborhood pools to cool off. From the smiles on their faces, you can tell they are happy to be in the water (see photos).
  • Get something cool in your belly. is open until 10:00p.m. in the summer, so after a really hot day, make your way down to the local ice cream parlor and fill your belly with something icy and cold. Also, you do not have to break your summer diet to enjoy since they offer sugar-free and fat-free options.

  • The coolest places to be are those with air conditioning. If you are looking to get out of the house, but want to be inside, the in Rumson is open Friday until 5:00p.m. and Saturday until 4:00p.m. Fair Haven's library located at Borough Hall is open until 5:00p.m. on Friday and until 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Also, if you head to River Rd. in Fair Haven, you can do some shopping as you quickly jump from one air conditioned shop to another along the .
  • For some, the best place to stay cool is in your own home. Leave the lights off and relax with a nice glass of cold lemonade in front of the T.V. Can we say movie marathon?
