Heat Advisory Issued In South Brunswick, Cooling Centers Now Open

Temperatures are set to hover around the low-90s on Tuesday and cooling centers have now opened in the township.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — As temperatures soar across the state, the South Brunswick Office of Emergency Management has issued a heat advisory.

The high temperatures are expected to until Friday.

Temperatures are set to hover around the low-90s on Tuesday, with slightly warmer temperatures focused around the I-95 corridor, the National Weather Service added.

In fact, Tuesday marks a return to even hotter temperatures, as the 90-degree-and-up streak will continue this week with a high near 90 on Wednesday and a high near 93 on Friday, forecasters said.

Residents looking to get a break from the heat can visit the South Brunswick Public Library from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today through Thursday, or 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, The South Brunswick Police Department lobby is also open for those seeking respite from the heat.

Here are some heat safety tips shared by the South Brunswick OEM:

  • Hot cars can be deadly. Don’t leave children or pets in the vehicle. The inside temperature of the car can quickly reach 120 degrees.
  • Stay hydrated. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.
  • Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone or who are more likely to be affected by the heat.
  • If you don’t have air conditioning, seek relief in places like schools, libraries, theaters, malls, etc.
  • Avoid extreme temperature changes.
  • Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays.
  • Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.
  • Postpone outdoor games and activities.
  • Use a buddy system when working in excessive heat. Take frequent breaks if working outdoors.
  • Check on animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat. Make sure they have plenty of cool water and shade.
