How Many Inches Of Snow Will South Brunswick Get, And When?

A winter storm warning has been issued for South Brunswick as a snowstorm is expected to hit the region Friday night into Saturday.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — It's already started to snow in New Jersey, but forecasters expect much more to come Friday night into Saturday.

South Brunswick could be in for a lot of snow. The National Weather Service placed the Township under a winter storm warning from Friday 7 p.m. to Saturday 7 p.m. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 11 inches, with winds gust as high as 40 mph is expected.

Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Accumulating snow is expected to begin Friday evening, becoming heavy at times through Saturday morning.

The South Brunswick Department of Emergency Management is monitoring the storm which is also expected to cause power outages and hazardous road conditions.

Residents have been asked to remove trash and recycling cans from the street, and park vehicles in the driveway so that snow removal crews can work efficiently and effectively.

Loose items which may blow away by heavy wind need to be secured. "Stay home until the storm is over and roadways have been cleared if you can. If you must travel, leave extra time to reach your destination, and drive with caution," The OEM said.

After the snowstorm snow should be removed from sidewalks so that pedestrians can walk safely.

On Friday, Gov. Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency in New Jersey ahead of a massive snowstorm expected to bring up to 18 inches of snowfall to the state.

At a weather briefing at 11:30 a.m., Murphy declared a state of emergency in New Jersey, effective 5 p.m. Friday. A commercial vehicle travel restriction will also be put in place today, the governor said.

State offices will also close at 3 p.m. ahead of the storm. "We're certainly hoping for the best, but we are, without question, preparing for the worst," Murphy said.

"Our advice to everyone is to be prepared to hunker down once you get home this afternoon and stay home. Stay home tonight and stay home tomorrow. Whatever you may need to get through a snow day, get it on your way home today so you do not have to venture out."

Here's the forecast for the weekend by the National Weather Service:

  • Friday night: Snow. Areas of blowing snow after 4 a.m. Low around 18. North wind 5 to 10 mph increasing to 10 to 15 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New snow accumulation of 3 to 7 inches is possible.
  • Saturday: Snow, mainly before 2 p.m. The snow could be heavy at times. Areas of blowing snow. High near 24. Blustery, with a northwest wind around 20 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches is possible.
  • Saturday night: Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low around 9. Wind chill values as low as -3. Blustery, with a northwest wind 10 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.
  • Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 26. West wind 5 to 10 mph.
