Land Near Woodlot Park Re-Zoned for Redevelopment
Affordable housing will likely go there at some point, to satisfy the state's requirement.

South Brunswick, NJ - A plot of land across the street from the 152-acre Woodlot Park was named a redevelopment zone Tuesday night in a unanimous vote by the South Brunswick Township Council, TAP Into reported. (The same park where a mother bear and two cubs were spotted Monday, reportedly eating birthday cake out of a garbage can.)
Back in March, the township approved a planning/redevelopment study for the property on New Road, warning that affordable housing would likely go there at some point. The land -- currently an empty field -- is on the south side of New Road, across the street from Woodlot Park. Several empty lots of land throughout the township will likely one day have affordable housing units built on them, to fulfill state requirements. However, some residents who already live on New Road are opposed to the development, saying traffic congestion will only get worse in the area if the development is built, adding an estimated 300 more cars on the roads.
According to township attorney Don Sears, South Brunswick is mandated by the state to build around 1,700 affordable housing units, with possibly another 500 more ordered by the court, reports TAP Into. A court decision on the final number is expected by the end of September, giving South Brunswick a better idea of exactly how many affordable units it has to build.
