India Independence Day Celebrated (VIDEO)
Communities comes together to sing India's national anthem on the 100-year anniversary of the song's composition.
India Independence was celebrated this week with a flag-raising ceremony and singing of India's national anthem on the 100th anniversasry of the song's composition.
Indian-Americans, government officials and community members gathered for the event in West Orange to celebrate India’s 65th Independence Day, which was August 15. Among the traditions shared were garlanding, placing flowers on a guest, aarti — a fire ceremony and applying tilak — a red mark on a guest’s forehead.
These rituals are done to welcome guests and show publicly the important value of the distinguished visitors who included Dr. Sunita Kanumarg, M.D., AAPI, American Association of Physicians of Indian Origian, President; and Dr. Sudahir Parik, publisher with News India Times and recipient of one of India’s highest civilian awards.

“It’s a great success,” observed Nitin Maniar, co-chair of AILIV, Asians Living in Livingston. “We hope to do it again next year much bigger.”
