NJPAC Community Engagement invites you to a Newark Jazz Crawl.

The Newark Jazz Crawl is an annual event organized by New Jersey Performing Arts Center Community Engagement (NJPAC) as part of the TD James Moody Jazz Festival. This free event brings live jazz to various locations throughout downtown Newark, creating a vibrant and musical atmosphere. The Jazz Crawl offers a unique opportunity to walk across downtown Newark and experience a variety of jazz styles and interact with the local jazz community

2024 Let our annual Jazz Crawl fill your afternoon with good vibes. Part of the TD James Moody Jazz Festival, this free program brings live jazz to locations throughout downtown Newark. Participants can enjoy performances by talented young jazz artists at different venues, including Just Fish Bar & Grill, Heritage Hall, and Clement's Place.

Jazz Crawl partners include Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University - Newark, MENTOR Newark and NJPAC's Jazz Advisory Committee. Here's the lineup just waiting for you.

Just Fish Bar & Grill 27 Halsey St. Sup and dine to the accompaniment of the talented young artists of TD Jazz for Teens. There is no cover charge, but brunch is available for purchase at Just Fish Bar & Grill.

The TD Jazz for Teens is a comprehensive and sequential jazz education program that develops well-rounded young performers through access to life-changing experiences. Celebrate the music and poetry of Gil Scott-Heron, in partnership with the Central New Jersey Alumni Chapter of Lincoln University. Live music band curated by Gregory Burrus Productions.

James Rohlehr (Pronounced Rolair) aka Jimbo Ro

A former street musician, James has produced 9 CD projects for and jam, co produced 5 CD projects for 13 stories records, 2 performances for US State department, Musical director for African American churches Inaugural ball for president Obama 2013. Musical director for the “COMPANY FREAK BAND”. James has also worked with Hip Hop rapper producer, Heavy D, and Jazz violinist Regina Carter.

James “Jimbo Ro” Rohlehr, (pronounced Rolair) is a gifted guitarist, singer, songwriter, composer and producer, with West Indian roots. He’s received 2 National Endowment for the arts Fellowships, and studied with John Lewis, John Corigliano, George Morel, and Jack Wilkins. James is the Winner of the 1997 President’s Award for songwriting from the Songwriters Guild of America for excellence in the Art and Craft of songwriting.

The Hahne Building, located at 54 Halsey Street in Newark, New Jersey, is a historic structure that has been beautifully restored. Originally opened in 1901 as Hahne & Company, a premier department store, it has now been transformed into a vibrant arts and cultural center known as Express Newark

IJS presents the NJPAC Newark Jazz Crawl w Jalin Shiver

Clement's Place 15 Washington St. Newark, NJ

A Jazz Jams session audience participation welcome - curated by Wayne Winbourne, executive director of the Institute for Jazz Studies at Rutgers University - Newark.

Jalin Shiver James Moody Scholar and rising star saxophonist Jalin Shivers will bring his all star quartet plus other young jazz musicians into Clem's for the Newark Jazz Crawl.

Jalin Shiver is a talented alto saxophonist from Newark, New Jersey. He started playing the alto saxophone in the fifth grade and continued to develop his skills at Newark Arts High School. Jalin has performed with renowned artists such as Christian McBride, Sean Jones, and Jose James. He is currently studying music at New Jersey City University.

Jalin has also been recognized for his exceptional talent, having been selected to perform at the Kennedy Center alongside jazz greats like Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. His unique sound and dedication to jazz make him a notable young musician in the jazz community.

Clements Place Jazz is located at 15 Washington Street on the Rutgers-Newark campus. The series is sponsored by Rutgers Newark and the Institute of Jazz Studies, and it honors the legacy of Dr. Clement Price, Newark's city historian and devoted jazz fan. The Jazz Jam events features talented musicians performing a variety of jazz styles, and it provides a welcoming space for both novice and seasoned jazz musicians and singers to jam and improvise with the professional band.
