Commuting Home: What You Need to Know

Delays and cancellations of NJ Transit trains due to a derailed train Tuesday morning are expected to continue into the evening, according to NJ Transit. Already, some locals are calling tonight "Commute-ageddon," and heavy rain is unlikely to help.

Basic info:

• Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line trains are operating limited service this evening, subject to 60-90 minute delays.
• Midtown Direct trains are being routed to/from Hoboken Terminal.
• Cross honoring of rail tickets/ passes in effect on PATH and NJ TRANSIT bus and private carrier buses.

NJ Transit will continue to operate limited service on the Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast line into Tuesday evening. Trains on both lines are subject to 60 to 90 minutes in and out of New York. Midtown Direct trains are being routed to and from Hoboken Terminal for the remainder of Tuesday. NJ Transit will cross-honor rail tickets and passes on the Newark, Hoboken and New York PATH trains and NJ Transit and private carrier buses.

Trains to and from Hoboken Terminal are subject to 15 to 20 minute delays due to congestion from Midtown Direct trains. Passengers should expect cancellations or combined train service, as well as crowded conditions onboard trains Tuesday evening.

The delays stem from a Trenton-bound Northeast Corridor train which experienced a minor derailment as it was departing New York Penn Station at 7:53 a.m. Tuesday. Two unoccupied cars of the 10-car train derailed. There were no injuries reported among the 300 customers or train crew onboard.

NJ Transit and Amtrak are investigating the cause of the derailment.
