Prospect Street Scene of Car Thefts

The following arrest information was supplied by the village of South Orange Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Attempted Theft/vehicle

The South Orange Detective Bureau is investigating an attempted theft of a 2002 Jeep Liberty from a parking lot adjacent to South Orange and Fairview avenues.

According to police, the victim said sometime between May 16 and May 24, someone attempted to steal the vehicle by breaking the side rear window and then damaged the ignition.

Theft from vehicle

A South Orange resident told police someone had entered his unlocked 2005 Cadillac and stolen $50 in cash and a bottle of cologne from his glove box.
According to the victim, the theft occurred sometime between 8 a.m. on Sunday and 9 a.m. on Monday at the lot adjacent to the Rite Aid at 139 S. Orange Ave.

Theft of Vehicle

A South Orange resident told police his silver 2000 Audi A6 was stolen between 9 p.m. May 20 and 11:15 a.m. May 22 from the parking lot of Our Lady of Sorrows on Prospect Street.

Later that day, police reported, a South Orange resident said he saw an unknown man enter his unlocked 2010 Acura, which was parked on South Kingman Road and remove a backpack and a tool bag.
The victim described the man as African-American with a medium complexion and a mustache. He reportedly was wearing a white t-shirt and dark baseball cap.
The suspect then fled into the Silver Audi A6.

Burglary to vehicle

A victim told South Orange police someone had pried open the driver’s side door of his 2006 Infiniti parked on Meeker Street on May 21 and ransacked the car. Nothing was reported stolen. 

Burglary/Community Center

The South Orange Detective Bureau is investigating the theft of a baseball glove from community center, South Orange police reported.

According to the director of the South Orange Recreation Department, police said, sometime between 5:30 p.m. on May 21 and 7:20 the next morning, someone broke a storm window on the west side of the building and entered the community center through the unlocked interior window.

No other items were reported missing by police.

Criminal Mischief

South Orange police are investigating a May 21 act of criminal mischief.
According to an eyewitness, the driver of a Honda Accord, which police believe was stolen in Newark, damaged a 2008 Ford Edge parked on Fairview Avenue.
Police say a South Orange resident said he saw the Honda Accord driver damage the door lock of the Ford Edge.

Attempted Theft /Vehicle

South Orange police are also investigating the attempted theft of a 2002 Jeep Liberty from an apartment parking lot on Fairview Avenue.

In the May 22 incident, police say an eyewitness saw four African-American men get out of a black Honda Accord, reported stolen from Newark, and attempt to steal the Jeep.
 The suspects fled prior to police arrival.

Possession of CDS/Arrest

An 18-year-old Newark resident was arrested on Holland Road May 21 for possession of a controlled dangerous substance, South Orange police said.
Jihad Snead was arrested at approximately 6:00pm after police received a call from area residents.
When police arrived, police said, they interviewed Snead and found him to be in possession of the marijuana.
Following his arrest, police said, Snead was processed by police.

Warrant arrest/Suspicious person

A 36-year old South Carolina man was arrested May 21 and for soliciting on Crest Circle door to door without a permit, South Orange police said.
Freddie Williams, of Darlington, was arrested after police received a call from area residents.
While he was being processed, South Orange police discovered Williams had a outstanding warrant from Boonton Township.

Following his arrest, police said, Williams was processed by police.

Theft from vehicle

According to South Orange police, a 2010 Dodge in a parking lot sustained damage to the driver’s side door lock and had both had both the owner’s manual and the registration removed.
The car, parked in the Our Lady of Sorrow’s parking lot adjacent to Prospect Stree, was reported damaged between 2:30 and 10:30 a.m. on May 22.

Lewdness

South Orange police investigated an lewdness incident May 19 inside a store at Irvington and Fairview avenues.
According to police, a woman said at approximately 7:50 p.m. an African-American man, approximately 19, and wearing a gray sweatshirt and light-colored khaki pants exposed himself to her.
Following the incident, the man reportedly fled west on Irvington Avenue while the victim called police.
A search of the area for the man was unsuccessful.   

Armed Robbery

The South Orange Detective Bureau is investigating a May 19 robbery as a woman was leaving a bus.
According to police, the victim she said was robbed at gunpoint after she exited the bus at Dover Street in Newark and was walking on the north side of South Orange Avenue by Stanley Road.
The victim said she was approached by a man who had crossed the street from the south side at the intersection of Stanley Road and South Orange Avenue.
The man demanded her property after pointing a black semi-automatic handgun at her. The suspect took her bus passes and a small amount of cash before fleeing on foot east on South Orange Avenue.
The suspect is described as an African-American man, 6 feet tall, 140 lbs.  and dressed in all black including a black ski mask covering his face.

CDS Arrest

On May 19, a South Orange police officer arrested a juvenile and charged him with marijuana possession.
According to police accounts, the officer was on routine control when the he noticed the youth acting suspiciously inside a parked vehicle on Ralston Avenue at about 8:45 p.m.
After the officer’s further investigation, the juvenile was reportedly found  with the drugs, police said.
The youth was arrested and processed.
