South Orange Obituary: Michael Botein, Law Professor, Fulbright Scholar

The South Orange resident was a professor at New York Law School as well as the director and founder of its Media Center.

South Orange, NJ – South Orange resident Michael Botein passed away on Aug. 3.

“Michael Botein, age 71, died on August 3rd at his home in South Orange.

“Husband of Kris Fischer, father of Matthew Botein and Liz Walker, father-in-law of Susan Herzlinger Botein and Ike Walker, grandfather of Rachel, Jack, Ella and Izzy.

“A 1966 graduate of Wesleyan University, he earned a J.D. from Cornell University in 1969 and an L.L.M. in 1972 and a J.S.D. in 1979 from Columbia University. A professor at New York Law School and the director and founder of the Media Center, he was a tireless advocate for his students. A scholar in telecommunications, cable television and regulation, he was the author of multiple treatises, casebooks and articles and shared his expertise as a Fulbright Senior Scholar and a visiting professor in law schools around the world.

“We will miss his intellect, unique thinking, creativity, magnanimity and kindness. Donations in his memory can be made to the Michael Botein Memorial Scholarship Fund.”

According to a YouCaring online fundraising campaign for the scholarship, Botein, a professor at New York Law School and the director and founder of the Media Center, “was a tireless advocate for his students.”

“A scholar in telecommunications, cable television and regulation, he was the author of multiple treatises, casebooks and articles and shared his expertise as a Fulbright Senior Scholar and a visiting professor in law schools around the world,” the campaign states.
