Summer Reading in South Orange – Maplewood: Kids’ Edition
Summer programs span the two towns and all ages
While the local libraries bustle year ‘round, the librarians pull out all the stops for summer reading. This year’s state-wide theme is “One World, Many Stories,” which librarians use a starting point for the summer’s activities.
Students in the South Orange- Maplewood School District are eligible to use all three branches of the two towns’ libraries. Bring proof of address and school (report card, for example) to register for a card.
Monday, June 27, is Opening Day for the summer program in both towns. At South Orange, prizes will be revealed during the festivities, 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. At Maplewood’s Main branch, the summer begins with an outdoor (weather permitting) performance of Give & Take Jugglers at 7 p.m. (Bring a blanket or chairs.)

But don’t check in and go home; both libraries are running incentive programs for kids who read. Keep track of those hours to earn prizes, kids, and don’t forget that attending library events counts double.
From yoga in Maplewood, to Legos across the two towns, to a Princess and Prince party and an astronomy lesson, there is something for every kid in town at the library.

Of course, Patch can’t resist highlighting two events in particular. On Monday, July 11, at 7 p.m., our own Marilyn Lehren, Livingston Patch editor, will perform at South Orange. On Friday, August 5 at 4 p.m., weekend editor Sonya Kimble-Ellis will lead participants in “The Sandcastle Kids: A Mayan Adventure,” based on her book of the same title, at the Main branch of the Maplewood library.
Some Maplewood library activities require pre-registration, in person, at the library. At both libraries, there are activities that require an adult present or have age suggestions. Stop by and check out the action – and a book or two.
