100 Days of Donations: Bloomingdale Kids Collect Pet Supplies

Much can be accomplished in 100 days as students of the Martha B. Day School proved when the kids collected 615 items to be donated to the North Jersey Community Animal Shelter, in Bloomingdale, during their first 100 days of school.

The donation drive was held in celebration of the 100th day of the 2012-13 school year on Feb. 14 and led by kindergarten teacher Erika Chapman. Kids in grades pre-k through first grade collected the items.

"We collect the donations for the 100th day of school with the goal of hoping to meet 100 items and we collected 615," Chapman said.

Items collected include pet toys, blankets, cat and dog food, cleaning supplies for the shelter and more. The students also got to know Cocoa, a dog being sheltered, and Ray, a special needs dog that was born blind. Volunteers Jennifer Adams, Animal Control Officer Lisa Perry and Nancy Snow-Broderick visited with the kids and talked about pet care, safety around animals and the shelter in general.

Chapman said she will continue to encourage the kids, and community as a whole, to donate to the shelter whenever they have extra items they do not need.
