Accused Butler Murderer Shot Husband in Self-Defense, Attorney Says

The attorney representing Amalia Mirasola in her trial for the shooting death of her husband in their Butler home in 2010 said Mirasola shot Carl Mirasola in self defense, according to nj.com.

Amalia Mirasola, 47, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, called Butler police on May 22, 2010 and said "I think I shot my husband." Two of the couple's daughters were home at the time, and nj.com reported that at least one of the daughters may take the witness stand in the trial, which is expected to continue on Wednesday. Carl Mirasola was 43 when he was shot six times.

Amalia Mirasola was indicted on murder charges by a grand jury in March 2011.

Tuesday was not the first time self-defense was brought up in relation to the case. Mirasola's attorney, Kalman Geist, told a judge during pre-trial proceedings in November that the woman felt threatened by her husband. The attorney said Carl Mirasola had been taking disability checks from his wife and seeing a girlfriend.

The case represents the only murder in the past two years in the Borough of Butler.
