2 Classrooms Closed At Verona School Due To Sagging Ceilings

The classrooms will not be reopened until they are deemed safe. All the district's buildings will be inspected for any similar problems.

VERONA, NJ — An ongoing safety issue at Laning Avenue School has caused the closure of two classrooms.

Ceilings in rooms 108 and 109 are sagging due to vapor pressure causing the nails that adhere the plaster to the furring strips to detach, Superintendent Rui Dionisio said in a letter to parents.

Dionisio was informed of the sagging ceilings Tuesday morning. He ordered another inspection of the school and there were "no other safety issues" discovered.

"We take the safety of our students and staff very seriously," Dionisio said.

Dionisio contacted the district architect and ordered a full inspection of all buildings with a structural engineer in the coming days. He said repairing the ceilings should take about two weeks. School personnel are making the necessary adjustments to the school day until repairs are completed.

"In the meantime, we will continue to monitor our buildings closely, but we have no reason to believe that there are any safety issues at this time," Dionisio said.

Officials also discovered a sagging ceiling in room 110 of the 100-year-old Laning Avenue School on July 31. Dionisio requested the school be inspected then, and no additional structural issues or safety concerns were found then.
