Despite all the advances in research and treatment, the United States continues to wage a war against heart disease, the country’s #1 killer of both men & women.
The good news - there are so many success stories of patients who nearly lost their lives but were given a second chance thanks to state-of-the-art heart pumps that allow their hearts to rest and recover.
On Thursday, June 20, 2024, the first day of summer, several of these grateful patients not only had the opportunity to reunite with their care teams at Hackensack University Medical Center, where they received care and treatment, they also got the chance to actually see, touch and learn about the Abiomed heart pumps that helped save their lives.
This heartwarming reunion, between many of the hospital’s most sick patients, who were so happy to return to the hospital to celebrate with and thank their caregivers in person, was held on the first day of summer, the longest day of the year, now that their darkest hours are behind them.
Cardiogenic shock is a serious condition that occurs when a patient's heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet his or her body's needs. Cardiogenic shock can happen after a heart attack or open heart surgery, or result from a condition called cardiomyopathy.
The devices, used in each of the patients’ cases, work by temporarily taking over the pumping function of the heart to ensure that the heart can still pump enough blood for the body while reducing strain on the heart during recovery.
