Cedar Grove Public Library is 'More Than Just Books'

Library Staff, Volunteers Educate Residents on Resources and Programming during Open House

Residents learned about the various resources and programming offered by the Cedar Grove Free Public Library during a “Get to Know Your Library” Open House and Bake Sale on Thursday, January 18, 2024. The event was organized by the nonprofit Friends of the Cedar Grove Public Library, which works to increase awareness and support of the Library as a community resource.

This was the first event for the Friends organization, which was recently reenergized by a new Executive Board and local volunteers. The nonprofit received 501©3 status in 2023.

“Part of the mission of the Friends is to increase visibility of Library resources, and this Open House served as a platform to highlight that the Library offers more than just books,” said Denise Bailey, President of the Friends of the Cedar Grove Public Library. “We thank the Cedar Grove residents, Library staff and volunteers, and local businesses whose support contributed to the success of this event. As our Friends organization expands, we encourage the community to join us in our work to enhance the Library as a valuable community asset.”

The Open House featured a scavenger hunt with prizes, bake sale, and pajama story time for young readers. Residents had an opportunity to sign up for a Library card and learn about traditional and digital resources, as well as lesser-known offerings such as museum passes and genealogy databases.

Local businesses that supported the Open House included Anthony Francos Pizzeria, Cedar Bean’s Coffee Joint, Esposito’s, Europa Nail Spa, and Lombardi’s Bar and Restaurant.

The event also marked the official kickoff to the Friends’ membership drive, through which residents and businesses can support the Library. For more information on fundraising efforts, visit www.GiveButter.com/FCGPL.

“Working with the Friends has been a wonderful experience,” said Catherine Wolverton, Director of the Cedar Grove Free Public Library. “They bring such energy and new perspectives. The recent Open House enlightened the community about what the Library offers in an interactive and engaging way. I can’t wait to see what the future will bring.”

Items not sold during the bake sale were donated to St. Agnes’ Food Pantry in Little Falls, which is serving local residents affected by flooding.
