Girl Scout Awarded Rare Medal of Honor

When Our Lady of the Lake School fourth-grader Olivia Fisher’s father recently suffered a seizure, the Girl Scout did what she does best — she stayed calm and rushed into action, saving her father’s life.

Fisher, a member of the Verona school’s Junior Girl Scout Troop 20515, was recently recognized with the rarely-awarded Medal of Honor given when a girl saves a life after she alerted her mother, called 911, provided the 911 dispatcher with all the pertinent information and helped her father safe until emergency personnel arrived.

Following the incident, Troop Leader Tracey Giordano nominated Fisher for the award. In late May, the Girl Scouts agreed and bestowed the award.

“Quite often we honor heroes in our lives,” Giordano said, “and frequently they are adults.  But a young Girl Scout from Verona proved that you do not have to be grown-up to be an inspiration to your entire community.”

Fisher was also honored at a school assembly where Principal Sister Mary Agnes Sullivan and Fr. Michael Hanley, pastor of the school, joined with the entire school to celebrate Olivia’s achievement and express pride in her efforts.
