Kahuna Swim Team Kicks Off Season
Free relay team sets pool record in second meet, shattering old record by 13 seconds.
The Cedar Grove Kahunas’ 2012 Summer Swim Team kicked off its season on Monday, June 25 in an away meet vs. South Orange and although the team did not win the contest, team members were still awarded medals:

Girls Freestyle:
Alexa Mandry (8 and under)
Summer Nesto (9-10)
Karen Raum (11-12)
Alyssa Fanelli (15-17).
Boys Freestyle:
Liam Fuchs (9-10)
Christain Sanducci (11-12)
Backstroke:
Alyssa Fanelli (Girls 15-17)
Butterfly:
Juliet Lombardi (Girls 8 and under)
Allison Niemiec (Girls 13-14)
Tom Curivan (Boys 13-14)
The squad also won relays in the Girls 12 and under freestyle and medley, the Boys 12 and under medley relay, and the 13 and over coed freestyle and medley relays.

The following day, the team hosted their first home meet of the season, once again narrowly losing but posting many more victories.
The highlight of the meet was when the girls 12 and under free relay team broke the pool record: Swimmers Julia Desjardins, Summer Nesto, Gianna Kubu and Alana Slattery set a new record of 1:07:18, breaking the old record of 1:07:31 set in 2007.
Other home opener victories Tuesday included:
• A 1st , 2nd and 3rd place sweep by Alexa Mandry, Molly Bauer and Nicole Vragolic in the Girls 8 under freestyle.

• 1st place finishes in the freestyle by Eric Walton in the Boys 8 and under, Summer Nesto in the Girls 9-10, Liam Fuchs in the Boys 9-10, Alana Slattery in the Girls 11-12, Christain Sanducci in the Boys 11-12, Lauren Taurano in the Girls 13-14, and Tom Curivan in the Boys 15-17.
• Karen Raum won the Girls 11-12 backstroke.
• Kaela Tully won the Girls 13-14 backstroke.
• Mitch Layne won the Boys 15-17 backstroke.
• Carlene Topoleski won the breaststroke (Girls 8 and under), while Liam Fuchs (Boys 9-10), Karen Raum (Girls 11-12), and Maggie Coleman in the Girls 15-17 age group took their respective groups. Juliet Lombardi, Julia DesJardins, and Alison Niemiec won their age group breaststroke heats.
• The Girls 13-18 individual medley was swept by Cedar Grove’s Maggie Coleman, Kara O’ Sullivan and Emma Silber finishing first, second and third.
Cedar Grove capped off the evening with wins in the 13 and up coed relay and the 12 and under girls medley relay, in addition to the 12 and under girls free relay .
