Police Investigate Identity Theft in Verona

May 5: A Fairview Avenue resident told police at 10:22 a.m. she was contacted by her credit card company after charges were made on her card from Spain.  The resident told the credit card company she did not authorize the charges. Police advised her to monitor her credit cards and gave her an identity-theft pamphlet. 

May 5: Verona police were contacted at 3:05 p.m. after a wallet was found in Verona Park. The owner was located and the wallet was returned. 

May 5: Verona police were contacted at 3:41 p.m. after a cage and rabbits were abandoned on Sunset Avenue.  The rabbits were left near the side of the road. An area resident agreed to take the rabbits and care for them. 

May 6: Verona police are investigating the theft of a wallet from a car parked in a Pompton Avenue parking lot.

The car owner told police when he returned to his car at 2:45 p.m., a man was sitting inside his car. When the owner confronted the man, the man said he got in the wrong car and left.

When the resident looked inside his car, he discovered his wallet was missing.

He described the suspect as 5-foot, 5-inches tall and either white or Hispanic.

May 8: A South Prospect Street resident told police at 5:51 p.m. he hired a taxi to pick him up at the airport.

The resident told police although the taxi never showed up to pick him up, the driver is contacting the resident demanding to be paid.

Verona police contacted the driver and told him to stop calling the resident. 

May 8: Verona police arrived at the Roxbury Police Department at 11:14 p.m. to take custody of Brittany Stone of Little Falls on an outstanding warrant from Verona.

Stone was transported to Verona Police headquarters, processed and put in jail pending a court appearance.

May 10: Verona police were called to a Grove Avenue home at 1:10 a.m. after reports of loud music.

Responding officers reported they could hear the music from the roadway as they approached the house. They also saw a party was in progress.

Police issued a noise complaint to the resident.

May 10: Verona police reported Cumberland Avenue neighbors were disputing property lines between their properties at 8:15 a.m.

Both neighbors were advised of complaint procedures by police.

May 10: A Mount Prospect Avenue resident told police at 9:34 a.m. someone splattered her car and driveway with green paint.

Police also noticed a can of green paint in the roadway that appeared to have been run over by another car.

No damage estimate was available. 

May 10: A Claridge Drive resident told police at 4:08 p.m. his bank called him to verify a $2,500 charge the resident supposedly made.

The resident said he has been having problems with his home computer where the icons were moved on his desktop and programs he did not install were appearing on the computer.

The resident is having his computer analyzed by a private investigator and advised to monitor his financial accounts.

May 10: A Passaic man was arrested at 5:32 p.m.for driving with a suspended license and outstanding warrants following a traffic stop on Bloomfield Avenue, police said.

Jesus Gonzales was stopped after police noticed the car he was driving had an expired registration.

After further investigation, police discovered Gonzales was driving with a suspended driver’s license and had active warrants issued from Clifton, Passaic and the Bergen county sheriff’s office.

Gonzales’ car was impounded and he was issued several summonses.

He was taken to headquarters, processed and turned over to the Bergen County Sheriff’s department.

May 10: A Claridge Drive resident told police at 7:59 p.m. he received a letter in the mail saying he had an overdue balance on a Lowes credit card.

The resident contacted Lowes and found someone had used his information had opened an account.

Lowes closed the account and the resident was provided with an identity theft pamphlet.
