Verona Police Investigate Pair of Fires

The following information has been provided by the Verona Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

June 1: Verona police and fire officials were called to the Verona Pool at 8:29 a.m. on a report of a fire. After further investigation, it was discovered there was a mulch fire outside of the building. The fire was extinguished by the fire department. 

June 1: A Claridge Drive resident reported at 3:28 p.m. that when she moved into her home in April, the moving company failed to deliver several boxes containing various items of designer clothing. 

June 3: Verona police and fire officials were called to a vacant Forest Avenue home at 2:08 p.m. on a report of a chimney fire. Officials entered the house and found papers smoldering in the fireplace. The fire was extinguished and the homeowner was informed.

June 5: Police were called to Pilgrim Plaza at 12:15 p.m. along with the Verona Rescue Squad after someone fell and sustained a head injury. After being treated at the scene, the victim was transported to Mountainside Hospital. 

June 7: Verona police arrested Douglas Nelson of Newark after stopping his car on Bloomfield Avenue at 8:42 a.m. for an expired registration. After further investigation, police discovered Nelson had three outstanding warrants. He was processed and turned over to the Passaic County Sheriffs Department.

June 7: Verona police are investigating an identity theft incident at 10:58 a.m. from a Douglas Place resident. The resident told police she was contacted by a representative of Chase Bank who advised her someone had attempted to open an account using her information. The bank denied the account and the resident was provided with an identity theft pamphlet. 

June 7: Verona police are investigating a broken window at a Pompton Avenue business at 11:41 a.m. The owner told police sometime Saturday morning he discovered the broken window on the north side of the building. No value was given for damage.

June 7: Verona police were called at 4:06 p.m. to settle a dispute on Kenwood Avenue concerning traffic issues. Both residents were told how to report traffic concerns to the police in the future.
