Cedar Grove Woman Has Jewelry Taken

An 84-year-old woman apparently had her jewelry taken on Thursday afternoon and police are seeking the public's help in identifying two men.

Police say one man distracted the woman while they believe the other man took the jewelry from the house. Both men then fled. 

The woman said she discovered jewelry boxes in her bedroom were out of place and jewelry was missing and called police.

Church Expansion Hearing Postponed

A Cedar Grove Zoning Board official said Monday the public hearing scheduled for last Tuesday night on expansion plans for the St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church and has been postponed and tentatively rescheduled the hearing for Aug. 14.

The official said the church was not prepared to make a presentation at Tuesday's meeting.

On June 25, about a dozen residents of High Point in Cedar Grove attended the Cedar Grove Township Council meeting to petition the council and voice their concerns over a proposed expansion project.

Parents Launch Petition Against Chaperones

Verona parents who are angry about a group of fathers who supposedly got drunk at a school camping trip have taken their issue to the Internet.

After demanding that the Verona School Board take action, parents have launched an online petition trying to get the fathers banned from future school trips. As of Friday afternoon, the petition had 23 signatures.

“Once Upon a Child” Opens Its Doors

Fairfield’s new “Once Upon a Child” store on Route 46 West, owned by Verona mother-daughter Kim and Erin Schmidt, opened Tuesday and customers said they had been waiting with anticipation for the gently used toys, clothes, books and potties the store is selling.

Revamped Verona Inn Maintains Traditions

The reinvented Verona Inn has been through quite a few changes in its 65 years in business — changes that's kept the restaurant "packing them in," according to owner John MacEvoy. 

Both MacEvoy and his brother-in-law and co-owner Brian Mazzie were adamant about staying in town and picked Verona for the restaurant "because of the people of Verona and the powers that be in Verona" who have "invested their lives in Verona."

UNICO President Dedicated to Community

After nearly 19 years with the organization, Sal Ingallina was recently named the president of Cedar Grove UNICO, the national organization comprised of 6,000 Italian-Americans that engages the public in charitable works, supports higher education and performs patriotic deeds.
