1 Killed, 8 Injured In Fiery, Chain-Reaction Crash In Gloucester Co.: Police
One of the vehicles stopped in the center median and became engulfed in flames, killing the driver, authorities said.
ELK TOWNSHIP, NJ — A man was killed and eight others were injured in a fiery, chain-reaction crash Saturday night on Route 55 in Gloucester County, authorities said.
A Jeep SUV, Nissan SUV and Ford passenger vehicle were traveling southbound on the highway when the SUVs collided at 10:05 p.m. in Elk Township, according to State Police. The first crash caused a second accident between the Ford and Jeep.
The Jeep then stopped in the center median and became engulfed in flames, police said. The driver — David E. Hartman, 63, of Newfield — sustained fatal injuries.

Both of the other drivers and six passengers in the Nissan sustained minor injuries and were brought to the hospital, police said.
It's unclear what caused the crash, which remains under investigation.
