2 Dead, 4 Hospitalized After Turnpike Crash In South Jersey
4 people were ejected from the vehicle as it ran down an embankment and hit a tree, officials said.
HARRISON TOWNSHIP, NJ — Two people were killed and four others were hospitalized after an SUV ran off the New Jersey Turnpike and hit a tree Sunday in Gloucester County, officials said.
It happened at 1:06 a.m. on the Jersey Turnpike North in Harrison Township.
A 19-year-old man from Maryland was driving north with five passengers when he lost control of his Acura MDX, according to the preliminary investigation from State Police.

The Acura veered off the highway to the right, traveled down an embankment and hit a tree, said Sgt. Jeffrey Lebron, a State Police spokesperson. Four people were ejected from the vehicle during the sequence.
It's unclear what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

Two passengers were killed, Lebron said. Their identities were withheld as of Monday morning as authorities worked to notify their next-of-kin.
The driver and two others sustained "serious" injuries, and another passenger was moderately injured, Lebron said. All were brought to a local hospital.
The crash remains under investigation, and State Police had no other information available as of this writing.
