In recent years, the jackpots in Mega Millions and Powerball games have ballooned. Both contests have tweaked their formulas to generate large jackpots, which have also reduced the already-minuscule odds of winning the top prize, according to NerdWallet.

The larger jackpots have also led to greater ticket sales, while rising interest rates also factor into the advertised jackpots — paid annually to the winner over the course of decades if they choose that route. But most lottery-jackpot winners choose to receive a one-time payment of a lesser amount.
