Woman, 73, Dies In 3-Car Crash Involving Dump Truck: Police

The crash took place Thursday afternoon on Route 40, state police said.

PILESGROVE, NJ - A 73-year-old South Jersey woman died Thursday after the car she was traveling in was rear-ended by a dump truck, pushed into oncoming traffic and hit by another vehicle, authorities said.

The crash took place at around 3:21 p.m. on Route 40 westbound near milepost 7.3 in Pilesgrove, a spokesperson from the New Jersey State Police told Patch.

An initial investigation found that a Pontiac Bonneville was traveling west on Route 40 with one front seat passenger, Jane String, 73, of Pilesgrove, when a Mack GU713 dump truck hit the rear of the Pontiac and pushed the Pontiac into the eastbound lane, directly into the path of travel of a Nissan Maxima.

As a result of the crash, Jane String suffered fatal injuries and the Pontiac driver, Donald String, 72, of Pilesgrove, sustained serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital, state police said.

The driver of the Nissan sustained minor injuries; the driver of the Mack did not report any injuries.

Route 40 was closed in both directions in the area of the crash for about five hours, state police said.
