WEST ORANGE, NJ — Looking for a new dog or cat to add to your “forever family” in West Orange? Want to make a donation to help out a local animal shelter? The Alex Caprio Animal Control Facility at 311 Watchung Avenue has several furry friends who need a boost.

Built in 1995, the Alex Caprio Animal Control Facility is maintained by the West Orange Health Department Animal Control Division. The facility relies on fees from animal licensing, pet redemption, and animal adoption to fund its operations.

In 2023, the shelter took in 51 dogs and 34 cats, according to its annual intake and disposition report to the state.

“Adoption days at the Alex Caprio Animal Control Facility are held on the first and third Saturday of each month from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. In addition, we offer redemption and adoption hours Monday through Friday from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM. Extra adoption hours can also be arranged by appointment with one of our Animal Control Officers by calling the Animal Control Division at (973) 325-4121.”
