Essex County Teacher And ‘Family Man’ Dies At 75: Tom Murray

A well-liked "family man" who taught for more than half a century in West Orange and Newark died this week at the age of 75.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — A well-liked “family man” who taught for more than half a century in Essex County died this week at the age of 75: Tom Murray.

Seton Hall Preparatory School in West Orange wrote that Murray’s passing on July 20 has left a “deep sadness and heavy hearts” in the community.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Tom's wife, Donna, and his entire family at this sad and difficult time,” Seton Hall prep administrators said.

Murray taught math at Seton Hall Prep for more than 20 years, and started his career at Weequahic High School in Newark. According to his obituary, the Cranford resident died peacefully at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston. He was a “family man” who enjoyed trips down the shore, playing golf and coaching sports.

A wake will take place on Tuesday, July 23 from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Dooley Funeral Home (218 North Ave. West, in Cranford). A funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Michaels Church, 40 Alden Street in Cranford.
